What is osimertinib?

Osimertinib is the generic (international non-proprietary) name of an oral kinase inhibitor that acts on the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). It was first approved in the United States in 2015 under the brand name Tagrisso, marketed by AstraZeneca, and was authorised in the European Union in February 2016.[1][2]

According to the current US prescribing information (DailyMed, effective September 14, 2026), osimertinib is indicated for adults with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumours carry specific EGFR mutations detected by an FDA-approved test:[1]

The indications below summarise the cited official Tagrisso/osimertinib information. They do not establish an approved indication for any other product listed on this page.

  • adjuvant therapy after complete tumour resection (EGFR exon 19 deletion or exon 21 L858R mutation);
  • locally advanced, unresectable (stage III) disease that has not progressed during or after concurrent or sequential platinum-based chemoradiation (exon 19 deletion or exon 21 L858R);
  • first-line treatment of metastatic disease (exon 19 deletion or exon 21 L858R);
  • first-line treatment of locally advanced or metastatic disease together with pemetrexed and platinum-based chemotherapy (exon 19 deletion or exon 21 L858R);
  • metastatic EGFR T790M mutation-positive disease that has progressed on or after EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy.

Approved uses, contraindications, warnings and monitoring requirements differ between countries. Whether osimertinib is suitable, and at what dose, is decided by the treating oncology team:

This directory is not a complete prescribing or safety guide. Serious risks, interactions and monitoring requirements apply. Consult the current official product information and the treating oncology team.
